Justice for Indigenous Rights Defender and Environmentalist Berta Cáceres
KAIROS is shocked and deeply saddened by the brutal assassination of prominent environmentalist and Indigenous rights defender Berta Cáceres. We join a worldwide movement in condemning this heinous crime and demanding justice.
This statement was issued by KAIROS member Development and Peace, a partner of COPINH and the National Coalition of Environmental Networks and Organizations with whom Berta worked.
We have also included a link to Berta’s powerful acceptance speech for the prestigious 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize which she received in recognition for her work for environmental and Indigenous rights.
Berta Cáceres was a strong force for life. She was an incredible woman of courage and an inspiration to many. Her legacy lives on in the work of environmental and Indigenous rights defenders movements in Latin America and around the world. She will not be forgotten.
