The National Council of Churches in the Philippines has issued a statement condemning the attack against the Lumad Indigenous people

NCCP statement on the UCCP Haran sanctuary attack

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), a KAIROS partner,  has issued a statement condemning the attack, harassment and intimidation against the Lumad Indigenous people seeking refuge in the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) – Haran compound in Davao City on 25 January 2020.

KAIROS remains gravely concerned about the situation of the Indigenous peoples in Mindanao.  Earlier KAIROS joined churches in Canada in signing an ecumenical statement condemning these attacks and calling on the Government of Canada to work with counterparts in the Philippines to protect the rights to land and self-determination of Indigenous peoples in the Philippines.

The NCCP statement concludes:

Over many years, the NCCP and its member churches have extended support to the Lumad communities of Mindanao. We reaffirm this commitment and continue to lift our voice with the Lumad in their call for the end of militarization in their ancestral lands and attacks to their communities. We call on the government and its forces to put an end to these acts of violence against the Lumad and the church people.
