Table UN Declaration legislation this fall urges Indigenous rights coalition

The Coalition for the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which is made up of Indigenous Nations and representative organizations, human rights groups and faith communities, including KAIROS, is urging the federal Minister of Justice to table legislation to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as soon as Parliament convenes this fall.

This call follows years of advocacy that involved civil society, including KAIROS and its members and network.

A similar federal bill was passed by the House of Commons in 2018 – after public debate – and would be part of Canadian law today except for filibustering by a small group of Senators. It is vital that this urgently needed legislation is not defeated by further needless delays.

Read the public statement in English.

Details on how you can advocate for this call will soon follow.
