Support women peace-builders on International Human Rights Day

Agnes Awak

“The role of women in peace-making in South Sudan is crucial.”

These are the words of Agnes Wasuk Petia, reflecting on the conflict in South Sudan that she has lived through for much of her life. Agnes and Awak Deng, her colleague from the South Sudan Council of Churches’ National Women’s Programme, a KAIROS partner, have been in Canada since November 23 for KAIROS’ No Más II tour, making public presentations and meeting with MPs to describe the women-led peace-making efforts underway in South Sudan.

“Women never initiate wars,” she said, “But in situations of conflict and war, they are among the most affected. They are used as tools of conflict.”

Agnes and Awak articulated their message in a powerful CBC radio interview while in Thunder Bay – ‘Be the spark’: South Sudanese women call on Canada for help.

You can find news and information about the No Más II tour at www.kairoscanada.org/nomas2.
