Statement on the violent removal of Indigenous land defenders by the RCMP

protest sign: RCMP stand down! respect Wet'suweten governance and law

Promises of reconciliation are empty when the RCMP continues to arrest Indigenous people on their own land.  KAIROS Canada joined members of Climate Action Network – Canada (CAN-Rac) to call on federal ministers Marco Mendicino and Marc Miller and BC Minister Nathan Cullen to withdraw the RCMP and halt construction on the Coastal GasLink pipeline on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory.

“Both the federal and British Columbia governments regularly express their dedication to both climate action and reconciliation, yet undermine both by condoning the ongoing violence against Indigenous land defenders. Climate action cannot be separated from the broader project of Indigenous self-determination and decolonization.”
