KAIROS online info-hub to aid inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls
On October 4 – a day when Indigenous and non-Indigenous people gather to remember missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) – KAIROS Canada launched the MMIWG Information Hub on kairoscanada.org, offering resources and updates related to the national inquiry into MMIWG in Canada.
Resources include key reports, a timeline, stakeholder details, videos, commemoration projects and advocacy.
The hub’s purpose is to help allies stay informed about the issue and inquiry, strengthen solidarity and support for victims and their families, and reach out to other groups working in this area.
KAIROS welcomes the federal government’s decision to collaborate with Indigenous peoples – particularly the families of victims – on a national inquiry into MMIWG in Canada.
“We are hopeful the inquiry will raise awareness and understanding of the systemic sexist and racist attitudes and beliefs that are at the root of the violence against Indigenous women in Canada,” says Ed Bianchi, Program Manager for KAIROS Canada. “The MMIWG Information Hub, while not comprehensive, is designed to be a living webpage to help stakeholders and allies stay informed and able to respond throughout the inquiry. We welcome and encourage feedback and suggestions.”
KAIROS is working with its members, network, partners and the Canadian government to ensure that the inquiry into MMIWG is rooted in respectful and genuine collaboration, and addresses the systemic causes of this ongoing violence. The hope is that the KAIROS MMIWG Information Hub will help facilitate this work.
“We see this collaborative initiative in the context of our ongoing work on truth and reconciliation, and we remain hopeful that this inquiry will contribute to an end to violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada,” says Bianchi.
