Manitoba / NW Ontario KAIROS Regional Online Gathering 2021

This gathering is centered on Treaties 1 and 2 Territories, ancestral land of the Dakota, Anishinaabe, Ojibway, Ojibway- Cree, Cree, Dene, and the homeland of the Métis Nation. 

We are hosting a series of online Zoom sessions to replace our in-person annual gathering. All our welcome! One registration, one zoom link, to attend any or all of the following sessions. 

Indigenous Connection to the Land 

Thursday, February 25, 6:30 PM CST     

DEBRA TACAN is a respected Cree/ Métis Elder from Brandon. She will share Indigenous perspectives on all the gifts that our land gives us, how we need to live in relationship with our land, and how to care for it responsibly.  

Assiniboine Food Forest and Restoring the Land 

Thursday, March 4, 6:30 PM CST   

DAVID BARNES is a naturalist, environmentalist, and advocate who operates the Assiniboine Food Forest. He will share the work done on land by the Assiniboine River to preserve the ecosystem. 

*Following David’s presentation, a short Annual General Meeting will be held on Zoom. All KAIROS members and anyone interested in learning about the regional organization are welcome to remain online to attend.        

Investigating Unmarked Grave Sites and Burial Grounds at Site of Brandon Residential School 

Thursday, March 11, 6:30 PM CST  

KATHERINE NICHOLS is a Doctoral Candidate at Simon Fraser University, and DARIAN KENNEDY is a Brandon University student and the community liaison for the Brandon Indian Residential School Cemetery Project. Katherine and Darian will share their research on the burial grounds at the site of the Brandon Residential School occurring in partnership with Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and university partners. 

Indigenous Youth Suicides and Future Plans for a Healing Centre 

Thursday, March 18, 6:30 PM CST 

MARGE ROSCELLI is an Elder and health professional from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Marge will share the issues facing Indigenous communities and how communities are dealing with increasing numbers of youth suicide. She will also share plans for a Healing Center for their community.
