One year ago, Prime Minister Trudeau promised regularization (permanent resident status for undocumented people), and permanent resident status for migrant workers and students. A year later, migrants are waiting, while deportations continue.
Deportations of people like Fatumah Najjuma, a 28 year old mother and healthcare worker facing deportation to Uganda despite fearing for her safety. And Abu, a Bangladeshi international student who is facing deportation because he couldn’t pay high international tuition fees.
On December 16, 2022, at 10am, we will deliver petitions for Fatumah, Abu, as well as petitions for regularization and permanent resident status for all to the Minister of Public Safety in Toronto. Together we will call for an end to detentions and deportations and status for all.
14 federal Ministers in the Cabinet Committee on Economy, Inclusion and Climate “B” are set to debate regularization – permanent resident status for undocumented people – sometime in December. They will decide who and how many people will be included, before sending their proposal to all Ministers (the whole of Cabinet) early next year.
