An opportunity to work toward reconciliation through education.

The Blanket Exercise is a teaching tool developed by KAIROS to break down misconceptions about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

The training is in two parts:

PART I – Wednesday, October 14 from 6 pm to 8 pm: Experiencing and debriefing the Blanket Exercise together.

PART II – Thursday, October 15 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm: Introduction to leading the Blanket Exercise.

LOCATION: Canfor Room at the YWCA Hotel, 733 Beatty Street, Vancouver

Registration: Space is limited, for more info and to reserve your spot please email Katy at kquinn@kairoscanada.org.

More about the Blanket Exercise: Blanket Exercise participants take on the roles of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Standing on blankets that represent the land, they walk through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. They are directed by facilitators representing a narrator (or narrators) and the European colonizers. Participants are drawn into the experience by reading scrolls and carrying cards which ultimately determine their outcomes. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. Ideally, the exercise is followed by a debriefing session in which participants have the opportunity to discuss the experience as a group. This often takes the form of a talking circle.

Facilitators:Jill Harris and Katy Quinn
