The 2023 edition of the Ottawa Indigenous Fashion Week started on June 29th and is set to wrap on July 5th with an extended runway show and virtual panel discussion. The week’s activities will include a lecture and panel discussions that will explore the history of the Indigenous fashion industry, intellectual property and the connection between fast fashion and environmental degradation. A speakers series will also be held in partnership with academia, fashion designers, rural and remote entrepreneurs and otherwise creative small business owners. A discussion on the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals will also be emphasized in order to address the challenges brought about by climate change. The connection of these goals will then be tied to the multi-trillion-dollar fashion industry.
The SDNR Community Engagement team is hosting this event again this year after a three-year hiatus.
