The Hill Times printed this op-ed by Ecological Justice Coordinator, Amelia Berot-Burns, who writes: “The economic strategy to address the climate crisis must contribute to the global enhancement of human rights and equity. Otherwise, the move to a sustainable energy economy may adversely impact people in countries where poorly regulated corporate activity is already damaging.”

Connie Sorio, Migrant Justice Coordinator, joined more than 60 delegates from 24 countries in a visit to three communities in the Greater Manila Area that are impacted by poverty, displacement and the climate crisis. The visit was part of the Beyond Labels, Beyond Borders International Conference on the Rights of Climate Migrants, in Quezon City, Philippines, September 17-19.

Rachel Warden, Partnerships Manager, and Kirsten Van Houten, Global Partnerships Coordinator, traveled to the Philippines to meet with KAIROS partner, National Council of Churches in the Philippines and frontline human rights defenders. Bishop Rex Reyes’ challenge to be “credible, consistent and courageous” became the trip’s theme.

Staff of the South Sudan Council of Churches and Héritiers de la Justice, two of the five KAIROS Women of Courage: Women, Peace and Security partners, met in Nairobi, Kenya in July for a capacity building workshop to make financial and narrative reporting less onerous. 

A new book on the Great Lakes watershed includes a chapter by Beth Lorimer, Ecological Justice Coordinator (on maternity leave) on the KAIROS watershed workshop and its links to climate justice. Edited by Patricia E. Perkins, Local Activism for Global Climate Justice is available here:

More than 40 non-governmental, labour and faith-based groups in Canada, including KAIROS and several of its members, signed a joint statement denouncing the escalating human rights crisis in Colombia and urging the Canadian government to take strong action to support a continuation of the country’s peace process.

On September 6, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordered the federal government to pay compensation to First Nations children, youth and families harmed by the child welfare system.

September 26 marked the fifth anniversary of the 2014 forced disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students and the killing of six people, students and bystanders in Iguala, Guerrero, in southwestern Mexico. This case stands for the ongoing internal conflict in Mexico, a conflict with global origins in which Canada plays a prominent role.
