Faith communities and climate action

Day 4 - Climate Action Challenge

The Season of Creation is a time to recognize ecumenical collaboration on care for our common home, so today we feature the work of For the Love of Creation, which is bringing together Canadian faith communities and faith-based organizations to do just that. This faith-based coalition aims to advance meaningful responses to the climate emergency in the next decade, through education, reflection, action, and advocacy.  The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically impacted every aspect of our lives. Existing economic, political, and social vulnerabilities are being exacerbated by the pandemic at a time when significant action is needed to protect our climate.

For the Love of Creation calls us to respond to this moment and work for changes that respect the integrity of the planet and the dignity and rights of all people.

To date, For the Love of Creation brings together over 30 churches and faith-based organizations in Canada, including KAIROS, the Anglican Church of Canada, the Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the Canadian Religious Conference, Citizens for Public Justice, Development and Peace – Caritas Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, the Mennonite Central Committee, the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, and the United Church of Canada.

For the Love of Creation  is beginning to engage people individually and in community, as congregations and organizations, across the country in a climate justice conversation centred around theological reflection, local and congregational engagement and political advocacy.

As a first action, For the Love of Creation launched an e-petition in July, calling on the Government of Canada to:

  • reduce GHG emissions by 60% below 2005 levels by 2030 through a just transition;
  • honour the rights of Indigenous Peoples; and
  • support climate action and pandemic response in the Global South.

We encourage you to sign it today to let our political leaders see that people of faith support them in taking meaningful action to address climate change, honour Indigenous rights, and support the Global South.
