As Canada and the world battle and recover from fires and floods fueled by climate change, KAIROS’ Climate Action Week, September 11-17, will focus on the root cause of the crisis: fossil fuels. During the week, events, reflections and actions will be centred around the theme: Decolonizing Climate Action: Keep the Oil in the Soil and Let Justice and Peace Flow. Join our two online events on September 12 and 14 to learn more about the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and how you can support it.

KAIROS Canada’s global partners are helping more women victims of war and conflict empower themselves to become effective peacebuilders. They will visit Canada from September 25 to October 6 to share successes of the Canada-funded KAIROS Women of Courage: Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Program. During Climate, Conflict, Gender: KAIROS Canada’s Women of Courage Visit 2023, the partners will visit Toronto, September 25 to 30 to share experiences, strategies and outcomes and celebrate the significant achievement of this six-year program. During the second week, from October 2 to 6, partners will travel to Kelowna, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and Sydney.

For the Love of Creation Youth Climate Strike Advisory Team calls on all people of faith across Canada to “fold up” their commitment and send it to decision makers through the Creating for Creation initiative. During the Global Climate Strikes this month, write your commitments to change and your calls to governments and corporations on a square of paper and fold it into a simple or more complex shape, representing one of the many species that are endangered by climate change and related harms. 

In addition, For the Love of Creation is encouraging Multifaith Climate Justice Prayer Gatherings to feed into the Global Climate Strike. FLC is offering an honorarium in each city for any young people (25 and under) who would like to organize such a gathering in their location.

KAIROS’ global partners will participate in the UN Regional Climate Weeks this fall! KAIROS secured a grant from the Ontario Public Sector Employees Union (OPSEU) to support global partners who are eager to strengthen their capacity and leadership in climate negotiations and strategies related to their local and regional environments. This additional support from OPSEU represents an opportunity to continue to listen to and amplify the voices of the delegates by supporting them in their communities in the lead up to COP28.  

The Sixties Scoop Network released 12 groundbreaking in-depth video interviews with Sixties Scoop survivors on National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21). The videos are part of its In our own Words: Mapping the Sixties Scoop Diaspora project, funded by the Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation. KAIROS collaborated with the Sixties Scoop Network to help secure this funding for this important initiative.

KAIROS Canada joins Indigenous peoples, the faith community, civil society and others in the call for the Manitoban government to ensure that the bodies of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran return to their loved ones. Morgan and Marcedes were murdered and left in the Winnipeg landfill. The government has shamefully refused to search for them. This search must bring dignity to their lives and honour their loved ones.

Cross country

Join the largest-ever globally coordinated action to demand that governments end fossil fuels. The climate crisis is escalating but so too is the global movement for climate justice. We need all hands-on deck. For the Love of Creation will provide an honorarium of $100 per city for one or two individuals who are 25-years-old or under to help organize a group of people to participate in the Global Climate Strike as well as a preceding multifaith prayer gathering.

Migrants and their allies are mobilizing once again on September 17. The message we will deliver to the Canadian government is loud and clear - Regularize Everyone: It’s time. Join the Migrant Rights Network on September 17 for a massive cross-country day of action for Status for All. KAIROS Canada and hundreds of other civil society organizations have endorsed this rally. Get involved!
