September 20-27, 2019 will mark the Week for Future. Both nationally and internationally events will be happening in support of those fighting for responses to the climate emergency.

The week will begin with a school strike for climate led by Friday’s for Future on September 20th. KAIROS will amplify this youth event, but beyond supporting and promoting the global protests, we will not be taking action that day.

The United Church of Canada (UCC) has also created a wonderful resource for additional information.

September 23rd is the United Nation’s 2019 Climate Action Summit. This summit is being held in New York City to accelerate actions to combat climate change and to encourage the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, hopes that the meetings will “ send strong market and political signals and inject momentum in the “race to the top” among countries, companies, cities and civil society that is needed to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

September 27th is the day of global striking for adults promoted by thousands of participants around the world. For more information, check out Canadian Earth Strike page or find your local organizer on Global Climate Strike by entering your city/ zip code.

KAIROS staff will strike in Toronto from 12-3 p.m. to support climate action from governments and corporations. We encourage those who can strike to join a march in their area, but if a complete strike is unrealistic, the below options can be considered.

  • Join a local march during your lunch hour
  • Donate to one of the organizing environmental groups: Earth StrikeGlobal Climate Strike
  • Make a sign and ask a friend to carry it on your behalf
  • Hold a Kitchen Table Conversation to discuss climate concerns with your colleagues, friends, and/or neighbours
  • Commit to reducing your carbon footprint and post details on social media about your plan
  • Hang a solidarity sign in your workplace to raise awareness
  • Wear a green circle pin in solidarity
  • Share social media posts about the strike to encourage others to join
  • Share stories and photos from the marches after September 27th
