KAIROS mourns the passing of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick
KAIROS joins countless others in mourning the loss of Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Cathy Merrick who died suddenly after collapsing outside Winnipeg court on September 6.
In 2022, Merrick was appointed as the first female Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and was re-elected this past July. Prior to that, she served as the Chief of Pimicikamak Cree Nation.
Known for her dedication and passion, Merrick championed the rights and needs of the 63 First Nations she served. Grand Chief Merrick dedicated her life to advancing the rights and well-being of First Nation Peoples.
“Our people and especially our young people are facing such uncertainty and extreme challenges.” said Yvonne Bearbull, after learning of Grand Chief Merrick’s passing.
As an advocate for MMIWG and Indigenous health care, Merrick was a pillar of strength, a role model and unafraid to have the hard conversations and move the needle for her people.
On behalf of KAIROS, Steering Committee Member Ruth Plett attended the public services at the Manitoba Parliament building to pay respects and sign the book of condolences.
“She was greatly valued,” stated the Northwest Ontario and Manitoba regional KAIROS group.
“The time has come for you to rest and allow us to carry your aspirations and vision forward,” writes Connor Sarazin, a member of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, an artist and KAIROS’ Operations Specialist. “We honour your leadership when you walked with us along the Red Road. Now, we honour your guidance as our ancestor. Listen for the many nations across Turtle Island, as we honour your journey back home in ceremony.”
