Bridging the gap on education for reconciliation

Indigenous learning in the classroom

In an online article on CBC Aboriginal, Chelsea Vowel articulates clearly the gap between the TRC’s call for K-12 mandatory coverage of the four elements of Indigenous history and culture, and current reality.

In its Call to Action 62.1, the TRC urges each province to include in its K-12 curriculum the residential school legacy, treaties, and historical and contemporary contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Vowel draws on KAIROS’ Report Card on Provincial and Territorial Curriculum on Indigenous Peoples in her assessment of the province’s current status on this issue. Unfortunately, the gap between the TRC’s call and current coverage in Canadian schools is still quite wide.

You can help close this gap.

Send an online letter to your MPP or MLA and spread the word! Or, to add even more legislative punch, sign and circulate a paper petition. We have one for each province or territory. Paper petitions are significant when presented in legislatures and provincial parliaments. To learn more and take additional action, visit our Education for Reconciliation page.

Education is an important step on the road to reconciliation. Thanks for helping to make a difference!
