CALL ON CANADA TO SUPPORT THE PEACE PROCESS IN THE PHILIPPINES
CALL ON CANADA TO SUPPORT THE PEACE PROCESS IN THE PHILIPPINES

KAIROS and  the heads of The United Church of Canada, The Anglican Church of Canada, The Evangelical Church in Canada, Development and Peace, The Presbyterian Church in Canada and The Philippine Independent Church have sent a letter to Minister Joly urging The Government of Canada to take concrete steps towards supporting the peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

The letter states:

“We believe there is a critical opportunity this fall for Canada to influence the resumption of the peace talks and to demonstrate its commitment to international human rights, peacebuilding and women’s participation in peace processes. It is also vital that Canada ensure it is not complicit in human rights violations and extra-judicial killings in the Philippines and that human rights are prioritized over economic interests.”

It goes on to outline concrete steps the government can take to publicly support the peace talks, initiate diplomatic efforts and prioritize human rights.

KAIROS and member churches look forward to opportunities to meet with the Government of Canada to discuss how we can support them to  implement these steps towards peace in the Philippines.
