EventsEarth Wounds: Ecological Stations of the Cross Kwekwecnewtxw: Traditional Coast Salish Watch House

Saturday, April 8, 2023 EDT @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Stations of the Cross are a Lenten tradition of prayer and contemplation on the events from the time that Jesus is betrayed in a garden, and arrested, to his body being laid in the earth. Since 2016 the Salal + Cedar community has hosted an Ecological Stations of the Cross. It is an annual connection of the Christian faith story, specifically the crucifixion, with the suffering of creation. This is always one of our most powerful gatherings of the year. Different individuals and communities prepare stations of 5-10 minutes. Offerings have included litanies, song, body prayers, physical/sacramental acts, direct action and often have an element of call and response.
This year we will gather under the grandmother cedar near Kwekwecnewtxw, the Coast Salish Watch House. The Watch House is located on unceded Coast Salish territory, near Forest Grove Park (8505 Forest Grove Dr, Burnaby) and can be reached by a fairly easy 5-minute walk up through the park to the Trans-Canada Trail.
We will be mindful as we prepare and pray: that we gather on unceded Coast Salish lands, that Holy Week with its dependence on the Gospel of John can often be a time of heightened Christian anti-Judaism.
We strive to be a community that celebrates all bodies, all ages, all genders and all families. Welcome.
