Position of Executive Director
KAIROS Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives/ Initiatives Oecumeniques Canadiennes Pour La Justice, located in Toronto, Ontario, is seeking an individual to fill the role of Executive Director on a full-time permanent basis effective early 2012.
KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives / Initiatives oecumeiques canadiennes pour la justice brings together eleven churches and religious organizations in a faithful ecumenical response to the call to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).” Dignity and Rights, and Sustainability, were approved by the Board of KAIROS as the major program areas to be pursued through research, education, advocacy and action in the Canadian and global contexts. KAIROS works with a variety of organizations: member churches and religious organizations, global partners, volunteer networks, and other Canadian justice organizations such as unions, Réseau œcuménique justice et paix, Canadian Council for International Cooperation, and the Climate Action Network.
The Executive Director, who is appointed by the KAIROS Board of Directors, is accountable to the Board for most aspects of the daily implementation of the strategic plan and operations. Areas of work consist of Leadership, External Relations, Fundraising & Development, Operations, Organizational Development and Governance. Under the terms of a Memorandum of Agreement, the Executive Director is legally an employee of the United Church of Canada.
In this role the Executive Director will provide effective leadership and management of KAIROS that is consistent with the Board approved strategic plan. S/he will articulate and implement a vision which energizes staff and enables them to achieve their program objectives, moving KAIROS forward among churches and in the public arena, using strong relationship building and public relations skills. The Executive Director exercises responsible oversight of all staff positions, including direct supervision of managers and ensuring respect for the terms of the collective agreement. This role ensures the development of budgets for approval by the Board and is responsible for financial management, fundraising and organizational development, and ensures that KAIROS meets its legal obligations. The Executive Director ensures accountability to member churches and religious organizations by working effectively with the Board and its Circles of Ecumenical Collaboration by assisting in setting terms of reference, facilitating communication and accountability, and supporting them in carrying out their various responsibilities.
The Executive Director oversees the development, implementation, management, coordination, integration and evaluation of all aspects of KAIROS’ operations, including program, finances, planning and staff. S/he ensures the effective management of KAIROS’s financial resources, and bears responsibility for budgets and provides leadership in analyzing the current political, economic, social, and cultural context, and in developing KAIROS’ responses to this context. S/he will be working with the Board to develop a clear and realistic mandate for KAIROS, encouraging KAIROS to grow in its capacity to function effectively in Canada’s bilingual reality. The Executive Director will ensure that programming respects and fulfills the mandate determined by the Board, will oversee the development and implementation of a functional staffing model and of appropriate personnel policies and practices and ensure that effective and inclusive planning and evaluation cycles are in place.
In this role s/he will ensure effective implementation of Board priorities, policies and strategic plan, and will keep the Board regularly informed of progress, working with the management team to plan, coordinate and direct staff work on the program. Providing supervision of the deployment of human and financial resources s/he facilitates the development of an open, participatory and consultative organizational culture.
The Executive Director develops strong relationships and effective communication with the member churches and religious organizations. S/he fosters working relationships and effective communication with other organizations and groups, such as global partners, NGOs, governments, regional networks, and donor agencies and acts as spokesperson for KAIROS, where appropriate and as required. Signs off on all public statements and significant public communications to ensure they conform to the protocols set by the Board.
In the areas of Fundraising & Development s/he provides leadership in setting strategy and implementation for all fundraising initiatives developing awareness of KAIROS’ goals, programs and accomplishments among member churches, religious organizations and other supporters. The incumbent should be familiar with trends in philanthropic activity in the charitable sector, with particular attention to trends in the Christian Churches within Canada.

Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, education, experience and ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Proven analytical competence together with a minimum of 8 years experience in related work such as a non-profit organization and/or in social justice programming.
- Passion for social justice, and commitment to the overall goals and mission of KAIROS.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work within Canada’s bilingual and multi-cultural reality. Ability to speak French would be an asset.
- Ability to manage and inspire staff, including work with both union and non-union staff.
- Ability to work with a Board of Directors in a shared leadership model.
- In-depth knowledge of fundraising practices, and success in fundraising.
- Familiarity with Canadian denominational structures and ability to work effectively in an ecumenical organization.
- Demonstrated experience in working with development, social and economic issues and the politics of influencing national and international public and private institutions.
- Familiarity with national and international ecumenical networks.
- Financial management experience, including budget preparation and financial reporting skills.
- Skills in public relations and strategic communication.
- Ability to inspire, support and encourage others to work cohesively toward common goals.

Requirement for travel is moderate. There may be international trips of varying duration.
