URGENT ACTIONS

Urgent Action

Urgent actions, normally only current for about a month,

are a way of protesting a violent action or preventing imminent violence such as a murder or military action.

We partner with many groups whose members are threatened with violence as a result of their work for justice. When their lives or the security of their organization are threatened, we respond with letters of protest to those in power and letters of solidarity to those under threat. Occasionally we also send out urgent actions focusing on a key government decisions which demands an immediate response.

KAIROS sends notice of an urgent actions through our network via our website, Facebook, Twitter and our e-mail list.

Partners in both Canada and the global South tell us that our letters do make a difference.

Please write your own response to the situation, using our letter as a guide if needed!

Stand Up for Human Rights in Colombia!

Friends, On Wednesday, March 10, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade put forth Bill C-2, the Colombia-Canada Free Trade Agreement, as Parliament's first order of business. This bill is considered a top priority by the government. Previous proposed legislation, which had been the subject of much contention among MPs, died when the government prorogued Parliament. KAIROS is asking Canadians to write immediately to their MP and two ministers, calling on the government to halt the bill until an independent human rights impact assessment of the trade deal is conducted and any problems identified are adequately resolved. (See the sample letter and contact … [Read more...]

View PDF of KAIROS/Amnesty International Joint Statement Intense and large scale oil and gas exploitation on the traditional lands of the Lubicon Cree First Nation in northern Alberta began in the late seventies. The impact on the community has been devastating. Within one generation the Lubicon’s hunting and trapping economy was destroyed. Efforts by the Lubicon people to adjust and develop an alternate way of life have been impeded by the federal government’s refusal to recognize the Lubicon’s land and resource rights, notwithstanding repeated calls by international human rights bodies including the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC), the UN Committee on Economic, Social … [Read more...]

Act now to save the lives of community activists in El Salvador

"Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty." -- Oscar Romero KAIROS is gravely concerned about the threats and killings of human rights defenders and environmental activists in the Department of Cabanas, El Salvador. Just before the New Year, we received reports that two more community activists were killed, bringing the death toll of human rights defenders in Cabanas to three in 2009. URGENT ACTION: RESTORE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (CIDA) FUNDING TO KAIROS

Further Background Material Situation - KAIROS submitted a 4-year program proposal to CIDA on human rights and ecological sustainability. The total program cost of the proposal is $9,211,483 over four years (CIDA contributes just over $7 million of that amount). This is consistent with previous levels of CIDA funding to KAIROS. - On November 30, we received a call from CIDA informing us that our 2009-2013 program proposal had been rejected and that KAIROS would no longer be receiving funding from CIDA. We asked for an explanation and were informed that our program did not fit CIDA’s priorities. This was the last day of an extension to our current proposal. No written … [Read more...]
