PERSPECTIVES FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH

World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth website

From April 19-22, 2010 close to 35 thousand people –Indigenous Peoples, NGOs, political leaders, and citizens from every continent – met in Cochabamba, Bolivia to come up with real solutions to climate change. The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, called the conference in response to the failure of the December 2009 United Nations conference on climate change in Copenhagen. The Peoples’ Summit on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba was a democratic space in contrast to the undemocratic process that produced the weak and far fram adequate Copenhagen Accord, which was negotiated behind closed doors by only a handful of countries. (see KAIROS Policy Briefing Paper #23: Copenhagen Accord or Discord - February 2010)

Attendees at the Peoples’ Summit participated in seventeen official working groups, many self-organized discussion groups, and a number of workshops which all contributed to the final outcome of the summit. The final declaration known as the Peoples’ Agreement and the position documents from each of the working groups encompass the results from these three days of consultations. The result is a clarion call for climate justice – a call for system change, not climate change.

KAIROS believes that the Cochabamba conference was an important moment in the struggle for climate justice. Most importantly, it provided a venue for indigenous voices worldwide to speak clearly and loudly at an international forum and to offer global leadership in finding real solutions to climate change. KAIROS believes that by giving space to herald their message, Canadians will be better equipped to make the personal and political commitments that are necessary to move forward on climate change. For this reason we have created this new section on our website for highlighting the views of our partners in the Global South, indigenous, fishers, farmers, peasants and civil society organizations that support their cause. We begin by posting all the documents that came out of the Peoples’ Summit on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cocabamba. Visit the site regularly for further updates.

GLOBAL SOUTH NEWS

Global South Expresses Concern about REDD

Ecuador Forest

REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) is a plan for curtailing greenhouse gas emissions by preserving the world's forests. KAIROS has examined REDD in the 2010 briefing paper Decisive Action Vital at Cancún Climate Talks. This initiative will be debated at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Durban, South Africa from Nov. 28th to Dec. 9th in Durban, South Africa. REDD would put a price on the carbon stored in trees and include an offset program allowing companies in industrial countries to claim greenhouse gas reduction credits by paying to avoid deforestation in the South. However, many Indigenous … [Read more...]

Ecumenical Conference on Mining – Final Statement

(Conferencia Ecuménica sobre Minería >>) Gathered under a banner bearing Psalm 24’s reminder – “The Earth is God’s, and all that is in it” – about 150 people from all parts of the Earth considered the impact of Canadian mining companies on their communities and offered some signs of what must be done differently. Almost 50 of the participants came from Latin America, Asia and the Pacific and Africa. They met with Canadians and people from Europe and the United States who have a variety of roles in the face of resource extraction industries: allies who work in solidarity to change laws in Canada so that companies operating overseas might be better regulated; … [Read more...]

KAIROS Briefing Paper #26: Decisive Action Vital at Cancún Climate Talks

One year after the failure of UN climate talks in Copenhagen, KAIROS has released a Briefing Paper calling for decisive action as negotiations resume in Cancún, Mexico. The paper contrasts the Canadian public’s desire for urgent action with a lack of initiative from the Canadian government. The paper evaluates some of the proposals that will be on the table at Cancún in light of the gospel imperative for equity, justice and restoration. Voices Unheard

June 28, 2010 Canada’s Indigenous peoples, threatened human rights workers in Congo and Colombia, HIV-infected mothers in Malawi, and Pacific Islanders whose homes and livelihoods are being destroyed by rising waters due to climate change —are among the strong articulate voices unheard at the G8 and G20 this past weekend in Ontario. Urgent global issues were ignored. Leaders of the world mobilized inadequate resources for maternal health. By focusing on deficit reduction without the implementation of a “Robin Hood Tax” on speculation, they ensured that the burden of the financial crisis will be borne by the very people most in need of pensions, health care and social … [Read more...]
