Action Opportunity: Keystone Tar Sands Pipeline – Ottawa, September 26, 2011

Keystone Pipeline Protest

On September 26, KAIROS will join with allied Indigenous, civic and environmental organizations on Parliament Hill to protest a new export pipeline from the Alberta tar sands to the Gulf of Mexico. This pipeline would violate the rights of Indigenous peoples in both Canada and the United States to Free, Prior and Informed Consent, as enshrined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, over resource extraction projects. Furthermore, the amount of additional bitumen that would have to be extracted to fill the pipeline would significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions and be contrary to KAIROS policy against further approvals for tar sands projects.

For more information on the Keystone XL pipeline read the KAIROS paper Fate of Tar Sands Pipelines Crucial for Climate Justice.

Prominent KAIROS partners including George Poitras, Former Chief of the Mikisew Cree First Nation at Fort Chipewyan, Alberta and several Nobel Laureates including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Adolfo Perez Esquival have written to President Obama urging him not to approve the Keystone Pipeline.

Some citizens will choose to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience.
KAIROS will not be participating in that part of the protest. We welcome all who wish to stand with our banner to contact Caroline Foster at cfoster[at]kairoscanada[dot]org to confirm the location.
