Churches gather to support democracy and peace building in Congo

Two years ago, Peter Lamont was deeply moved by testimony from Eliza, a rape survivor.  The retired military judge was in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) representing the Presbyterian Church in Canada with the KAIROS’ delegation. Prior to his visit to DRC, he had never been to Africa.  Meeting Eliza and learning her story of suffering and overcoming adversity was one of the most powerful experiences of his time in Congo.

In late May, Peter represented KAIROS in Geneva at the World Council of Churches (WCC) international conference on peace and security in Congo. Peter was one of 75 people from around the world to coordinate ecumenical efforts on peace building and democracy.  He had planned to be accompanied by KAIROS partner Chantal Bilulu, who coordinates the Women and Children’s Program at Héritiers de la Justice, but she was unable to obtain a travel visa.  The WCC is shining a spotlight on Congo this year and organized this international conference to help coordinate ecumenical efforts around peace building and good governance.  The following communiqué was issued by conference participants on June 1, 2015:
