The 2009 Gathering has now taken place!

KAIROS Gathering 2009 gives a boost of new energy to the ecumenical social justice movement

“Best conference I have been to yet!”, “Not enough room in a book for my best moments”, “Thank you for filling me to overflowing” “When is the next one?”—These were just a few of the phrases uttered by folks at the end of the KAIROS Gathering.  Entitled  “ The end of the world as we know it – Thank God!”, the event was far from an end, rather a moment of renewal for seasoned activists and a new beginning for many others.

The community that gathered June 17-20, 2009 at the University of Waterloo was diverse – young, old, from coast-to-coast-to coast, francophone and anglophone, global and Indigenous partners.  About 350 people, what they shared was a passion for social justice, and an interest, most often a commitment to a faith based expression of that justice in the world.

The days were filled with music and worship, small group discussions and large group plenary.   One participant called it a “3 and ½ day bible study!”

Traditional leaders Dan and MaryLou Smoke-Asayenes helped us create a sacred space by inviting us into Indigenous ceremonies.  The sacred fire that was tended by the firekeepers throughout the event was a quiet solace for many who visited.

Speakers, including Ched Myers, Sheila Watt Cloutier, Sharon Ruiz Duremdes, gave powerful food for thought and souls.  KAIROS global partners shared stories of struggle and resistance, and enduring hope.  Over 40 workshops explored topics from anti-racism to songs of the struggle, eco-spirituality to fair trade olive oil, human rights in the Congo and Indigenous rights in Canada.  All offered opportunities for networking and skills development.  Many of the key note talks are now available on the KAIROS website as PDF files.  Stay tuned also for some video clips!

Participants left refreshed and rejuvenated.  The positive response was overwhelming.  Our goal of bringing strength and inspiration to the growing the ecumenical social justice movement in Canada was certainly achieved! Check out the photo gallery or the media articles to get a flavour of the event.  Keep checking back as more resources and photos will be posted as they become available!
