Urgent Action
Tell Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay
to Adopt the Roundtables Report
May 28, 2007

Canada Must Adopt Recommendations to Regulate Mining Companies Overseas
This year, the KAIROS campaign has focussed on the creation of
binding legislation to ensure that Canadian companies --particularly
in the mining and oil and gas sectors-- respect the environment
and uphold human rights and community consensus when operating overseas.
Currently, a group of KAIROS partners from Africa, Asia and Latin
America is in Ottawa to speak with MPs and government officials
about the urgent need for such legislation.
Canada now has a unique opportunity to take a step towards creating
binding legislation and becoming a world leader in Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) in the mining, oil and gas sectors. In March
2007, the Canadian government was handed a blueprint for a new approach
to promoting CSR in these industries. A year-long multi-stakeholder
process of National Roundtables, chaired by the Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade, issued its Final Report with 27
recommendations for the federal government that, if implemented,
would increase transparency and corporate accountability. The report
was written by and achieved consensus from a panel of representatives
from industry, labour, NGOs, academia and socially responsible investors.
The government has yet to respond to the Report.
- KAIROS and its partners --fresh from a grass-roots tour of Western
Canada, Quebec and Ontario over the past week-- urge you to call
on the Government of Canada to:
- promptly adopt the consensus-based recommendations in the
Final Report of the National Roundtables as a first step toward
incorporating the proposed CSR Framework into binding legislation.
