Walk for Water on March 22!

What are you doing on March 22? On or around Wednesday March 22, people in nearly 50 communities across the country will join together in public forums, “water walks,” film showings and other events with a key message--keep water in public hands. KAIROS, Development and Peace, the Council of Canadians and CUPE all believe that equitable access to water is best accomplished when water and water services remain public, despite an increasing global trend towards commodification and privatization. Together we are marking World Water Day (March 22) with a nation-wide coordinated series of actions and events.

Be part of this groundswell of public concern for accessible, clean water. Visit http://www.kairoscanada.org/e/action/worldWaterDayEvents.pdf to find out about an event near you and plan to attend. And check out our World Water Day organizers’ guide at http://www.kairoscanada.org/e/action/worldWaterDayActionKit.asp for ideas.
We need your presence and your voice. Help us promote these events in your church and community and if you know of a KAIROS, D&P, Council, or CUPE event that isn’t listed here please let Sara Stratton know: sstratton .

Observed on March 22 every year since 1993, World Water Day is a time for nations to bring attention to and implement United Nations recommendations dealing with the protection of and access to fresh water. This year, it’s also the last day of the World Water Forum, a gathering of international financial institutions, multinational corporations and different governments which believe that privatizing water systems is still the best solution to the world’s water dilemma.

At the previous World Water Forum in Kyoto in 2003, activists from around the world demanded universal access to drinking water and lobbied against the privatization of water systems. The 2006 Forum, whose theme is “Local Actions for a Global Challenge,” promises to be even more hotly contested. On March 22, we will stand in solidarity with our Southern partners at the Forum in pressing for community control of water services - not privatization that benefits multinational corporations.

In Step with the World: World Council of Churches Urges Global Action on Water

In a statement approved on February 21, the Assembly described water as "an integral part of the right to life." The statement on "Water for Life" drew on the demand of the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople and New Rome, that water never be treated as private property and that "indifference towards the vitality of water constitutes both a blasphemy to God the Creator and a crime against humanity."

The Assembly said "access to freshwater supplies is becoming an urgent matter across the planet. The survival of 1.2 billion people is currently in jeopardy due to lack of adequate water and sanitation."
