Summary
We are seeking a creative, energetic individual with a strong commitment
to social justice and extensive experience in advocacy for international
human rights. As one of two Human Rights Program Coordinators at
KAIROS, you will be responsible for program development and implementation,
research and analysis, policy development, and advocacy in support
of our International Human Rights Program.
As a member of the Human Rights and Peacebuilding team, you will
help KAIROS advocate for systemic changes in order to reduce human
rights abuses in Asia and the Middle East.
General Responsibilities
Program Development and Coordination
- Within the framework of program directions developed by the
International Human Rights Program Committee, the program coordinator
will be required to translate strategic objectives into creative
and effective program initiatives.
Research and analysis
- Research and analyze issues relating to militarism and the
war on terror in Asia and the Middle East, as well as other human
rights issues.
- Critique national and international practices which contravene
human rights, particularly those of marginalized peoples, and
which perpetuate the criminalization of dissent.
Policy Development and Advocacy
- Prepare briefing/position papers for international bodies on
selected KAIROS policy issues.
- Conduct lobbying and advocacy on human rights issues with governments
and international bodies.
Communications/Education
- Assist in the development of human rights related educational,
campaign and communications resources
- Act as a spokesperson on Asia and Middle East human rights
issues.
Requirements
- Commitment to the mission and values of KAIROS
- Extensive experience in human rights advocacy, especially in
the context of Asia
- Demonstrated understanding of how civil society movements contribute
to social change and the public policy process
- University degree in international human rights, political
science, or other relevant degree.
- Ability to understand and present work in a Christian context.
- Proven ability to advocate and make presentations, especially
to governments.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications
- Ability to work collaboratively with churches, Canadian and
Southern partners.
- Ability to work in a collegial team, supervised by a Team Leader.
- Ability to travel overseas for periods from 2-4 weeks, usually
once a year.
- Functional knowledge of French is an asset.
Starting Salary Range: $41,955 to $46,205 (2005 salary scale)
