Heather Hamlin Gravells: Peace! (Click on image to enlarge)

A bright sunny day and we're off to our first workshops and presentations, choosing from subjects ranging from power and poverty, mothering, war and media, economic justice, women's struggles in poverty, environment and commerce, and hundreds of others. As pairs or small groups we attempt to navigate the city of Porto Alegre by bus, taxi or walking within the four main sites of the conference (Stadium, University, Docks and Amphitheatre). The last official event of the day was a speech at the amphitheatre, an outdoor forum, where over 150,000 people gathered to hear from the president of Brazil, Lula. As we stood crowded shoulder to shoulder, there was a sense of community filled with hope and peace. His words were in Portuguese but one knew that he had the respect of the crowd and that he cares about his people. Lula is off to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland where he will bring his messages of hope and peace. We gave him quite a send off!

All for now,
Marion Bryan and Heather Hamlin Gravells
