Having finally arrived in Porto Alegre, we set out on the first
day's adventure.During the afternoon, at continental meetings held
just in advance of the opening of the World Social Forum, we discovered
how important it is to put needs before structure. We listened to
representatives speak of foundation- building through addressing
the needs of local people-needs that we all share, such as religion,
human rights, gender justice, health, and environment. We are realizing
that the movement begins with identifying who we are, rediscovering
our culture and history, and placing ourselves within the world
context. Through this building process we realize that "another
world is possible".Throughout the day we saw images, heard
stories and experienced the process of foundation building. We walked
with the rural workers and heard of their world-wide struggles.
We listened to promises of consultation and cooperation, and heard
a common assertion that we as the grassroots must develop the alternatives.
For our KAIROS delegation, this culminated in joining more than
140,000 marching people who with us share a vision of a world not
as it could be, but as it must be. We raised our united voices and
our KAIROS banner as we walked through the streets of Porto Alegre
in an opening march, celebrating our common struggles, hopes and
visions.
Keeping in touch from the World Social Forum,
