Given the magnitude of problems we confront today, it may seem out of place to suggest that we have reason to hope. The issues are complex and defy easy solutions. Staying the course, where even minimal progress in reducing poverty, preventing human rights violations or reversing the rampant destruction of our environment, can take years, demands dedication, persistence and faith. However, the struggle is easier when we work as part of a wider 'hopeful' community that shares our belief that 'another world is possible'. One place that that hopeful community can be found is in the World Social Forum Movement. In January 2004, in India, the fourth World Social Forum will be held. The last Forum amassed some 100,000 members of that hopeful community from around the globe in Porto Alegre Brazil. Together they gathered, shared and acted on alternatives to "globalisation". A 17 member KAIROS delegation from diverse backgrounds carried Messages of Hope from Canadians to that "peoples' summit". On their return, they shared their learning and experiences with others at a series of local and regional WSF fora here at home. KAIROS supports the World Social Forum because we believe that
the very existence of such a diverse and optimistic gathering is
testimony to the power of faith and hope. While confronting the
negative effects of corporate-led globalisation has long been a
key part of the Canadian churches' work, the churches, through KAIROS,
also acknowledge the importance of proposing positive alternatives.
As the principal global gathering of people's movements, the WSF
provides a unique forum at which such alternatives can be developed
and the effects of their implementation discussed. |
