Sudan Action E-kit
Contents
The Canadian oil company Talisman was long engaged in oil exploitation
with the Sudanese government. The result of this partnership was
profit for Talisman and revenue for the government of Sudan - revenue
that fueled a civil war in which the government systematically bombed
civilians. The Canadian government profited from this situation
as well. Rather than restricting Talisman's actions, our government
invested significantly in Talisman through the Canada Pension Plan.
While profit accrued to Talisman and the Sudanese and Canadian governments,
multiple debts were created in the Sudan: an ecological debt, a
debt of peace, a debt of human rights, and a debt of tremendous
loss of life.
Until November 2002 when Talisman announced its intention to sell
its assets in the Sudan, KAIROS was intensively engaged in work
highlighting the impact of Talisman's actions and Canadian government
complicity. KAIROS and its Sudanese church partners will continue
to call for a suspension of all oil development activities in Sudan
until a just and lasting peace is achieved, and will continue to
monitor the impact of Sudanese oil development and the operations
of foreign companies working there.
