Statement by KAIROS Regarding the Kidnapping of
Bishop Jiménez and Father Orjuela of Colombia
13 November 2002

KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives strongly condemns the kidnapping this past Monday November 11, 2002 of Colombian Bishop Jorge Enrique Jiménez, Bishop of Zipaquira and Father Desiderio Orjuela, parish priest of Pacho (Cundinamarca). According to information received, both men were abducted by armed men near the community of San Antonio de Aguilera.

Bishop Jimenez, who serves as President of the Latin American Bishops Conference (CELAM), is well known for the active role he has played in the search for a peaceful settlement to Colombia's decades-old armed conflict.
KAIROS joins with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in calling on the persons responsible for this crime to release immediately and unconditionally Bishop Jimenez and Father Orjuela.

KAIROS expresses its solidarity to the Colombian Bishops Conference, CELAM, to the parish of Pacho and to the relatives and friends of Bishop Jimenez and Father Orjuela.
