AT UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE IN MONTREAL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER
28, 2005
(Toronto) KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives and the
World Council of Churches (WCC) are playing a lead role in ecumenical
and interfaith representation and action at the United Nations Climate
Change Conference which opens in Montreal today.
Faith groups such as the WCC and KAIROS are ensuring the unique
perspectives of people of faith are brought to the historic meeting
and are joining with other nongovernmental organizations in demanding
urgent action to deal with climate change issues. An 80 member international
ecumenical team has been assembled for joint action on issues.
In addition to sitting in and monitoring the official UN negotiations,
KAIROS will be facilitating and participating in a number of side
events including the following:
- December 3: Climate change workshop (10:30AM-1PM) with a particular
focus on youth and young adults that highlights the impact of
climate change on poor and vulnerable peoples; the responsibility
of major polluting societies to take action to reduce emissions
and to act in solidarity with those most affected by climate change;
major issues in the negotiations among governments at the UN conference;
strategies for faith communities to pursue climate justice.
- December 3: Civil Society mass demonstration through downtown
Montreal beginning at 1PM. There will be similar demonstrations
at major cities around the world.
- December 4: A major spiritual celebration, Un cri de la Terre/Call
of the Earth, at the beloved sacred shrine St. Joseph’s
Oratory www.saint-joseph.org/,
3800 Queen Mary Road, Montreal (doors open at 14.00h; service
begins at 14.30h).
This public multi-media event will include special music, images,
dance and theatre. Children will play an important role, as will
witnesses from regions seriously affected by climate change. The
service, sponsored by the WCC, is organised by members of Catholic,
Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist religious communities
with the collaboration of Equiterre and Greenpeace.
- December 6: a WCC sponsored side event on the Ethical Dimensions
of Climate Change featuring a dialogue among parliamentarians
and religious leaders.
