MEDIA RELEASE
A Call For Climate Justice – A KAIROS statement to Canada and
the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali

For Immediate Release/8:45AM EST December 11, 2007

(Toronto, Ontario / Bali, Indonesia) KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives is calling on the government of Canada to provide strong, progressive leadership in advocating for a just climate change agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia.

“The unbreakable bond between social justice and ecological wholeness impels Canadian churches to address the issue of climate change and to call on the government of Canada to take a leadership role in Bali, which will set out the framework for negotiations of the second phase of the Kyoto Protocol beyond 2012” says the statement. “The position and record of actions on climate change the Canadian government is taking to the UN talks in Bali are cause for deep concern in relation to these priorities”.

KAIROS is a church-based nongovernmental organization that works on a wide range of social justice issues in Canada, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, including ecology and climate change. A full copy of the Bali statement is available on the KAIROS website or at the following link:

In a related story, last month KAIROS issued a joint news release with Ecojustice Canada calling on the federal government to justify giving billions of dollars in tax breaks to Canada’s oil and gas corporations, while having scrapped a key climate change program designed to assist low-income Canadians. That release is also available on the KAIROS website as follows:

Both organizations have filed formal petitions with Canada’s Auditor General demanding that the government publicly respond to the obvious contradiction between subsidies that encourage fossil fuel production and spending on measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).
