KAIROS announces new Executive Director
June 18, 2003
TORONTO – The Board of KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice
Initiatives announces with great pleasure the appointment of Mary
Corkery to the position of Executive Director, effective September
2, 2003.
Mary brings impressive qualifications as well as a warm, open,
personal manner to her new position. Her career has been devoted
to global social justice and she is very familiar with KAIROS and
the ecumenical justice coalitions out of which it grew.
For the past nine years, Mary has been the Director of the English
Education Sector of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development
and Peace. Her responsibilities included fundraising and the education
program in English Canada, as well as participating in financial
management, strategic program planning, and policy development as
part of the senior management team.
Mary’s work is inspired by the Christian faith and transformation
of the world from a Christian perspective. She brings proven leadership
and administrative experience, and a collaborative management style
that fosters teamwork. In addition, she has facility with the French
language and has an understanding of Canadian regions, in particular
of Quebec and its culture.
Previously, Mary held fundraising roles with the Jesuit Centre
for Social Faith and Justice and Oxfam. Her employers prior to 1981
were the Canadian Congress on Learning Opportunities for Women,
Opportunity for Advancement, Womanpower Employment Centre, Metro
Social Services, and CUSO. Mary has a Masters in Education in adult
education.
Mary succeeds Patricia Steenberg who was the first permanent Executive
Director at KAIROS. Pat made a vital contribution to the new organization,
building its infrastructure and culture. Having served through the
transition period from the 10 founding ecumenical coalitions to
the current solidly-established organization, Pat decided it was
time for a fresh spirit to take KAIROS forward. The Board wishes
to thank Pat for her dedication to the work of KAIROS and for her
tireless service during her time as Executive Director.
KAIROS unites Canadian churches and religious organizations in
a faithful ecumenical response to the call to “do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah
6: 8) Informed by biblical teaching, KAIROS deliberates on issues
of common concern, striving to be a prophetic voice in the public
square. Inspired by a vision of God’s compassionate justice,
KAIROS advocates for social change, amplifying and strengthening
the public witness of its members. Responding to Christ by engaging
in social transformation, KAIROS empowers the people of God to live
out their faith in action for justice and peace, joining with those
of goodwill in Canada and around the world.
