(Toronto) Nearly 100 migrants and migrant justice advocates from across the country will be meeting at York University in Toronto from June 10-11, 2006 to lay the foundations for a national migrant rights network in Canada before some advocates meet with federal politicians in Ottawa. Participants from Hong Kong, Mexico, the Philippines and Taiwan will join the gathering. The groundbreaking conference is being organized by KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, in conjunction with labour and social justice groups. The National Migrant Justice Gathering: Building Solidarity, Taking Action will bring together individuals with recognized experience and expertise in the struggle for the rights of live-in caregivers, seasonal agricultural workers and persons without status. The program also includes a public event at Ryerson University (Jorgenson Hall, LIB-72, 350 Victoria Street) from 7:00-9:00PM on Saturday, June 10. It will feature live music and a panel discussion, moderated by Susan McClelland, recipient of the 2005 Canadian Media Award from Amnesty International. The two-day conference will result in a joint statement that expresses the gathering’s collective concern for migrant rights in Canada, including a call for improvements to the immigration system. A delegation from the conference will take this message to Ottawa. The conference is a joint initiative of KAIROS, the National Alliance
of Philippine Women in Canada, the STATUS Campaign, and the United
Food and Commercial Workers Canada. For Information: Adiat Junaid
