COP11/MOP1: Is the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the First Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. It is scheduled for Montréal, November 28 to December 9, 2005. Representatives from over 180 countries will meet in Montréal at the United Nations Climate Conference to negotiate the future of action on climate change. It is the first time that the COP has been held in North America, and Canada’s Environment Minister Stéphane Dion will chair the meeting. The Montréal talks are primarily about two things:
KAIROS and faith community partners will participate actively with other civil society and environmental groups, who are members of the Climate Action Network – CAN-Canada. We are accredited to the meeting through the World Council of Churches, bringing together over 75 faith participants - Southern partners, Canadians and Americans - to the conference. Environment Canada has provided generous assistance to enable our preparation, communication and participation in this important event, and to mobilize interest and public support. It is significant that there will be so many people of faith witnessing to the seriousness of the threat of climate change to the well-being of Creation and its most vulnerable members. In addition to sitting in and monitoring the negotiations, KAIROS will hold 3 workshops on Energy Efficiency for Religious Buildings and participate in several side events, which provide an invaluable source of information on current issues in climate change. We will also hold a daily morning Faith Communities Caucus Meeting, and attend daily briefing sessions of the Climate Action Network (CANet) to better understand the complexities of the negotiations. :: Why should the faith communities be involved? Our concern for the future of all life, especially for people and
livelihoods, moves us to urgent action. Our hope leads us to participate in efforts to devise just and appropriate institutions and systems for the building up of the Earth Community and the governance of the Global Commons. Our faith demands that we confront the impediments to achieving these ends. We appeal for renewed efforts leading to the pathways of justice, equity, equality and peace. We must be prepared to protect and preserve this fragile Earth, our island home.
