Indonesia is a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia that is home to the world's largest Muslim population. Although ex-President Suharto's brutal dictatorship ended in 1998, the global war on terror has facilitated the resurgence of the Indonesian military’s power. Many parts of the country are plagued by military repression and widespread human rights violations. The Indonesian military has a long record of human rights abuses, brutal repression of independence movements, involvement in sectarian violence and relationships with terrorist networks. Yet for reasons related to economic and political interests and Indonesia’s role as a key ally in the “War on Terror”, Canada and other western governments turn a blind eye to these abuses. KAIROS works with human rights and church partners in Aceh, Java and West Papua who monitor, investigate and denounce violations, and carry out peace-building activities. With our partners, KAIROS is actively engaged in advocacy campaigns to oppose militarism, defend human rights and end impunity in Indonesia. Our work is currently focused on Aceh due to the particularly acute human rights and humanitarian situation in the region. The reports and documents below provide information on the human rights situation in Aceh and advocacy work that KAIROS and its partners are engaged in. Contents
