Mining and resource extraction
Contents
KAIROS is concerned about the growing pattern of Canadian resource
extraction companies whose overseas activities are having a negative
impact on the environment and human rights, including the rights
of indigenous peoples. Canadian mining companies are operating worldwide
and their presence is expanding—as is our government’s
support for their operations. We’re focusing on several specific
cases at the request of our partners, and we’re joining a
cross-Canada effort calling on the Canadian government to hold the
extractive industry legally accountable for its actions overseas
and here in Canada.
The African Initiative on Mining, Environment and Society (AIMES)
is a KAIROS-funded partner with a pan-African network secretariat
at Third World Network - Africa. AIMES recently called on the Government
of Canada to regulate Canadian mining companies operating internationally
as part of the 2006 National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries.
The Canadian Government has regretfully yet to respond to the consensus
recommendations Report on Mining, Oil and Gas Companies made by
Canadian civil society organizations and industry in March 2007.
AIMES has issued a Position Statement on the 10th Annual
Strategy Meeting of African Initiative on Mining, Environment and
Society, June 24-25th, 2008, Accra, Ghana.
