Corporate Social Responsibility
Contents
Corporations have become increasingly powerful players within a
globalized economy. Yet few effective measures exist to govern their
activities in the international sphere.
Since 1975, Canadian churches have worked ecumenically to promote
responsible corporate behaviour, calling on corporations to be transparent
and accountable in their performance and to take seriously their
broader, long-term responsibilities within society. A central piece
of this work has been the development of the Bench
Marks document, which lays down comprehensive standards and
expectations fundamental to responsible corporate behaviour. A companion
Field Action Guide has also been produced to guide corporate social
responsibility research and action.
As shareholders, the churches use their investments to engage corporations
in dialogue. Through shareholder activism, the churches apply direct
pressure on corporations to improve their social and environmental
performance.
In addition, KAIROS offers, via e-mail, a quarterly newsletter
on corporate social responsibility issues, as well as regular shareholder
action alerts during the proxy season. Companies generally hold
their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) sometime between January and
June. In order to remind socially responsible investors who are
interested in voting their proxies during that time, KAIROS sends
out e-mail action alerts listing upcoming shareholder proposals
on social and environmental responsibility.
If you’d like to be put on the mailing list, please send
