Poverty in the midst of plenty is a fundamental injustice. Since
1989, the average Canadian family classified as "low-income"
has had to subsist on $9000 less than the poverty line. Social assistance
benefits across Canada have dropped almost 20% and food bank use
has nearly doubled. The poverty that flows from these cuts hurts
individuals, families and communities.
KAIROS believes that poverty in Canada is neither inevitable nor
acceptable. This country has abundant resources, and sharing these
fairly must be our first priority. We believe that together we can
begin to end poverty by placing priority on:
- good jobs with good wages
- income security
- affordable housing
- support for families, including strategies aimed at ending child
poverty
KAIROS works with partner groups to challenge harmful stereotypes
about poverty, and lobbies all levels of government to adopt policies
that put high priority on eliminating poverty.
